Customs duty and VAT on goods from China: what the forwarder does and what you prepare

Transcont teamUpdated 2 min read

Short answer

Checked 09.10.2026

We do not carry out customs clearance. A forwarder handles clearance, duty and VAT, your own or one we recommend, and confirms the exact amount for your product. We deliver the goods to the customs warehouse and hand over the export documents and the documents needed for clearance. Your part is to check, before you order, which certificates your goods require.

In short

  • We do not carry out customs clearance. A forwarder handles clearance, duty and VAT, your own or one we recommend. Many clients already have their own forwarder.
  • The forwarder confirms the duty and VAT for your product and your country. For an approximate total, use the landed cost calculator.
  • You check the certificates before you order. The requirements depend on the type of goods, and we ask the supplier for the documents before the deposit is paid.

Certificates by type of goods

Before you order, check which certificates and documents customs requires for your goods. The forwarder confirms the requirements, and we check whether the supplier has the documents and whether they refer to your product.

Before loading, we check the goods in our warehouses in Yiwu and Ningbo or at the factory, anywhere in China, and send you a photo and video report. The carton count, the description and the value in the documents then match the goods. More on the page customs documents and delivery and in the guide import documents for goods from China.

Countries in the region

We work the same way in every country: we deliver the goods to the customs warehouse in that country, and a forwarder there handles clearance, duty and VAT. The routes are on the pages for Macedonia, Serbia, Kosovo, Albania, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Frequently asked questions

  • How much customs duty do I pay on goods from China?

There is no single rate. Duty depends on the product and on the country of import. Your forwarder confirms the exact amount for your goods. For an approximate total, use the landed cost calculator.

  • Does Transcont clear customs or pay duty and VAT for me?

No. We do not carry out customs clearance. We deliver the goods to the customs warehouse and hand the documents to the forwarder, who handles clearance, duty and VAT. If you do not have a forwarder, we will recommend one.

  • Which certificates do I need to import from China?

It depends on the goods. Toys need CE marking, EN 71 test reports and a declaration of conformity. Lighting and electrical goods need documents under LVD, EMC and RoHS, a declaration of conformity and CE marking. Products in contact with food need the supplier's declaration for the material. Confirm the requirements for your product with the forwarder before you order.

  • Does Serbia's free trade agreement with China lower the duty?

Serbia has a free trade agreement with China. Whether it lowers the duty on your goods depends on the product and on proof of origin, and the forwarder in Serbia checks both.
