Most "1688 vs Alibaba" comparisons end with a winner. That does not help when you are buying for a shop in Skopje, Belgrade or Tirana. A cheap 1688 listing, an Alibaba quote and a price written on a Yiwu shop's business card are three different things. Each covers a different product, quantity and delivery point.
Choose the channel after you have written one buying brief and sent the same brief everywhere. Then compare what comes back.
What each channel is
1688.com. Alibaba Group describes it as China's leading integrated domestic wholesale marketplace. Its English Terms of Use (version 2025V2, effective 26 August 2025) cover use from outside mainland China: you contract with 1688.COM PTE. LTD., and clause 2.3 says services "may vary for different regions and countries". There is also a separate 1688 Global Supply Center at global.1688.com, with its own agreement: the buyer must be a registered member and pays "by credit card, bank transfer or any other payment methods available on the Sites". None of this proves that a company from Macedonia, Serbia, Albania or Kosovo can open an account, pay and receive goods from every seller. Check that for your own account.
Alibaba.com. Alibaba Group's annual report describes it as an international online wholesale marketplace that connects Chinese and overseas suppliers to overseas wholesale buyers. Alibaba's Buyer Central describes contacting sellers, sending a request for quotation, customising and negotiating, and it advises keeping all communication in the Message Center for Trade Assurance. The Trade Assurance guide says protection applies "when you order and pay on Alibaba.com" and tells buyers never to pay outside the platform.
The Yiwu market. Yiwu International Trade City is run by CCC Group, whose official online platform is chinagoods.com. The operator's overview from 24 September 2026 lists Districts 1 to 6, plus the Huangyuan clothing market and the production materials market. District 6, also called the Global Digital Trade Center, opened in October 2025 with more than 5,200 shops, mainly fashion jewellery, trend toys and smart devices. Bags and suitcases are in District 2, mainly on the 1st floor. Office and school supplies are in District 3, mainly on the 1st and 2nd floors. Some categories overlap. The operator says opening hours follow the notices posted at each market, so confirm them before you travel.

Write one buying brief first
Send the same brief to a 1688 seller, an Alibaba seller and the Yiwu shops you shortlist. If a field stays empty, mark it as unanswered.
- Product: material, dimensions, function, finish, and a photo or sample reference.
- Variants: every colour, size and design, with the quantity of each one.
- Packing: units per carton, carton dimensions, gross weight, retail packaging and labels.
- Branding: your logo or artwork, and written permission to use any brand or character.
- Quantity and ready date: total units and the date the goods must be ready in China.
- Named delivery point: the place where the seller's responsibility ends, such as their factory, a named port or a named warehouse in China. Use a trade term with that place; see our Incoterms guide.
- Documents: commercial invoice, packing list and any product documents your market needs.
- Payment: currency, deposit and balance milestones, beneficiary name and payment route.
- Checks: what is inspected before loading, by whom, and what happens if the goods differ.
- Quote validity: how long the price stands, and every charge it excludes.
Carton dimensions also tell you the volume. Put them into the CBM calculator before you decide between a shared and a full container.
The comparison table
← Scroll to see all columns →
| What to compare | 1688 | Alibaba.com | Yiwu market |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who you contract with | 1688.COM PTE. LTD. for the platform outside mainland China; the seller for the goods | Alibaba's platform terms plus the seller in the order | The shop's company; get its full legal name on the order |
| Language | Interface mainly in Chinese; English terms exist | English site; sellers' level of English varies | Chinese in the shop; you need an interpreter or agent |
| MOQ behaviour | Set by each seller; ask per variant | Ready to Ship usually lower than custom | Set by each shop; ask per colour or model |
| Payment route | Depends on your account, country and seller | On the platform, for Trade Assurance | As agreed in the order; deposit and balance are agreed in writing |
| Protection | 1688's terms say the platform is only an intermediary and not responsible for product quality; this is not Alibaba.com Trade Assurance | Trade Assurance for orders placed and paid on Alibaba.com | Your written order with the seller |
| Samples | Ask; stock items are easier | Ask; record the approved sample in the order | You see and handle the goods on the spot |
| Documents | Ask whether the seller exports at all | Ask for export documents in the offer | Ask each shop which documents it can provide |
| Who checks goods before loading | You arrange it | You arrange it | You arrange it, or an agent checks the goods at the warehouse |
Fill in one column per offer you receive. Compare prices only once you have filled in every row.
Why the cheapest listing is often not comparable
Prices only compare when the product is the same. In Yiwu, similar-looking glasses may cost 1, 2.5 or 5 RMB, and the quality is different at each price. Online it is the same story with more photos. One listing may be a thinner material, another may quote a single colour, a third may exclude the carton.
Before you compare, check that every offer gives the same material, the same quantity per variant, the same packing and the same delivery point. A price with an unnamed delivery point cannot be compared with one that says "delivered to a named warehouse in Yiwu".

Small orders: what actually changes the minimum
Small orders are not new. Alibaba.com's own buying guide from July 2021 already said Ready to Ship goods usually have a lower MOQ than customised products. We have not seen evidence that Chinese factories have recently started accepting small Balkan orders more often.
What lowers or raises the minimum for your order:
- Stock or production. Goods already in stock usually have lower minimums. A new colour, mould or print means production, and production has a minimum.
- Per variant. Ten colours of one product can mean ten minimums. Ask whether colours can be mixed in one carton.
- Your logo and packaging. Printed boxes and custom labels can carry their own minimum, set by whoever prints them.
- Repeat orders. A seller may accept a small first order and expect larger repeats. Ask for this in writing.
- Many suppliers. A mixed order from ten shops does not remove each shop's own minimum.
Paying safely on each channel
On Alibaba.com, keep the order and the payment on the platform. On 1688, use only the payment route your account actually offers for that order. In Yiwu, pay only as agreed in writing in the order. If anyone asks you to pay into a new bank account, on any channel, stop and confirm it through a contact you already know. More on deposits, bank details and checks: paying a Chinese supplier and how to verify a Chinese supplier.
Which channel fits which buyer
One specific product with clear specifications. For example, 10 CNC machines, or one moulded item in set colours. Remote sourcing suits this. Factory offers can be collected and compared against your brief, and a real factory always sends a live video the same day.
Many different small items. If you are choosing 100 different small items, come to Yiwu. You pick the exact goods, quality and price in person, and you see differences that photos hide. Some clients we have worked with for 15 years still visit once or twice a year for variety and new products.
You already know a 1688 or Alibaba seller. Keep the brief, the offer and the payment in writing. You still need someone to receive the goods and check them before loading.
What we do
We have four employed agents in China, working in English and Chinese. The team handles communication in Macedonian, Serbian and English. Our team in China includes people who speak Macedonian, and translators join when needed. With an individual agent, a client often has no company in the Balkans to turn to directly. Our head office is in Skopje.
On a Yiwu trip you get:
- a personal market agent and orders from several suppliers;
- a record of every item's supplier, product, quantity, price and specifications;
- one consolidated order file for your approval before shipment;
- collection in our Yiwu warehouse and checks of quantity, condition and specifications against the order, with a photo and video report;
- sourcing across China for items not found in the market.
We deliver to the customs warehouse and prepare the export documents and the documents needed for clearance. Your own or a recommended forwarder handles clearance, duty and VAT. Many clients already have their own forwarder.
Next step
For one specific product, start with our sourcing agent service. For a broad assortment, look at the Yiwu buying trip and the Yiwu market guide. Then send us your buying brief: product links or specifications, quantity per variant, carton details if you have them, and the country you are importing into. The brief shows whether your order suits remote sourcing or the Yiwu trip.
